Large grouping of cables, policy papers, memoranda, etc. from the files of JOHN G. ERHARDT (1889-1951) who served as Consul in Hamburg and Consul in London under Ambassador Joseph Kennedy. These items, from Erhardt's estate, emanate from his time as Minister Plenipotentiary to Austria, from the end of World War II to 1948. Included is: messages re: a possible airdrop of food to Vienna due to Soviet flight restrictions; U.S. civil aviation policy in Europe vis-a-vis the USSR; political analyses of Austrian provinces; trade between Austria and Germany; treatment of Nazis; 'Russian capabilities'; Soviet economic activities in eastern Austria; disposition of 'German assets' in Austria; strategic oil reserves; the Austrian oil industry; turnover of authority to Austria; movement of U.S. Forces within Austria, and much more.
