"THE CHICAGO DEFENDER" BLACK NEWSPAPER
Two issues of the weekly black newspaper "The Chicago Defender", published April 15 and May 20, 1961, with one issue of the paper''s daily edition, "The Chicago Daily Defender", published May 1, 1961. The paper was founded by Robert S. Abbott in 1905, and heavily reported and campaigned against Jim Crow-era violence and segregation, as well as urging Southern blacks to come north during the Great Migration. The lead story of the May 20 edition presented hear reports on the deployment of U.S. Marshals to Montgomery, Alabama to quell mob violence against Freedom Riders, activists who flouted segregated bussing facilities throughout the South in the summer of 1961. In part: "...Violence has flared on two successive weekends in Alabama over the ''Freedom Riders'' who are testing bus segregation practices in the south. Earlier, a mob of white men and shrieking women attacked and mercilessly beat members of a mixed group of ''Freedom Riders''. The outburst occurred at the Montgomery bus station when the Freedom Riders arrived from Birmingham. Even before the federal officers were ordered in, President Kennedy had a personal representative on the scene trying to ease the building racial tension..." Other notable articles spread across the three papers include a biographical sketch of Louis Armstrong and a feature on black baseball players, with a large front-page photo of Willie Mays. All are slightly toned, else very good.
