Description:

THE CAPTURE OF HERMANN GORING (20)
Important lot of twenty photographs, almost all original and many captioned on verso, showing the events of May 9-10, 1945 surrounding the arrest of former Reichsmarshal Hermann Goring. The photos, which vary in size from 2 x 2 in., up, show Goring meeting Gen. John Dahlquist and Gen. Robert Stack where Goring's party was met on the road near Mauterndorf, Goring in uniform at the time of surrender with his medals and cased baton, Goring's captors and members of the 36th Infantry, etc. With three negatives. Overall very good. Goering was moved to his castle at Mauterndorf after an Allied bombing raid on the Obersalzberg, having been freed on May 4th from arrest by a unit of Luftwaffe troops led by General Wolfgang Pickert. Pickert was concerned about the possibility of a Soviet advance capturing Mauterndorf, so he and Goring decided to seek out the nearest American unit, which was the US 36th Infantry Division, and instructed his adjutant Bernd von Brauchitsch to contact them.
