Description:

THE CAPTURE OF BILLY THE KID
LOUIS P. BOUSMAN (1857-1942) Western lawman who, as part of Pat Garrett's posse, captured Billy the Kid a few weeks before the latter was killed by Garrett. Though illiterate, Bousman had the ‘gift of gab' and is remembered for his colorful and embellished account of the arrest of Billy the Kid in his 1934 autobiography. Manuscript document, a statement made by Bousman recorded in another hand on verso of a D.S. of H. A. Russell, Justice of the Peace in Oldham County, 1p. legal folio, Feb. 9, 1884, related to a suit brought against a man for the theft of ‘our bay horse'. On verso is a statement made for Bousman in full: ‘Came to hand this 8th day of Feb. 1844 and execution the same day by taking into my possession the…horse…and surrender…as required by law. Louis Bousman…'. Folds, else very good.
