Description:

"THE BIRTH OF A NATION" ADVERTISING PAMPHLET
Original lithograph pamphlet, 8pp. 12mo., circa 1915, advertising D.W. Griffith''s silent film, "The Birth of a Nation", a three-hour epic chronicling the Civil War and the postwar reconstruction, best known for its depiction of the Ku Klux Klan as a heroic force, rescuing white women from lecherous blacks. The cover of the leaflet features a now-famous image entitled "The Fiery Cross of the Ku Klux Klan", showing a robed Klansman wearing a hood with a spiked helmet, mounted on a rearing, robed horse and waving aloft a flaming cross, all above the title of the film. The interior foldout bears several illustrations and images depicting scenes from the film, including a slave market, the Battle of Gettysburg and the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. It also lists several facts about the film, highlighting the great expense and scale that went into its production, as well as a quote from then-President Woodrow Wilson ''s "History of the American People", as featured in the film: "Adventurers swarmed out of the North, as much the enemies of the one race as of the other, to cozen, beguile and use the negroes... The white men were roused by a mere instinct of self preservation - until at last there had sprung into existence a great Ku Klux Klan, a veritable Empire of the South, to protect to Southern Country." The rear page features several rave reviews for the film, and advertises showings at the Elite Theater. Shows minor folds with minute tears to the edges and slight damp stains of the back page, else very good. Also present is the Spring-Summer, 1965 edition of "Film Culture" magazine, devoted entirely to analysis of the film. Two pieces.
