Description:

Excellent grouping of 14 photographs documenting the Battle of Aachen and the surrender of the German military forces in the city. The photos emanate from the estate of Lt. Gen. CLARENCE R. HUEBNER Lt. Gen. CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), the American general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division, popularly known as the 'Big Red One', during and after the D-Day landings, and whose forces took the city on Oct. 21, 1944 after 19 days of desperate fighting. The most important images are six 3 x 5 in. photographs of a large group of captive German soldiers, some being addressed by an officer, and another photo apparently showing an officer signing a surrender document. All of the photos are captioned '21 OCT 44 - AACHEN' on verso by Huebner, and are stamped 'CONFIDENTIAL'. Additionally, there are four 8 x 6 in. press photos with censors' stamps, variously showing Huebner, his aides, and the ruined city, along with four 8 x 10 in. copy photos of American tanks and soldiers in the streets during the battle. Overall very good to fine.
