Description:

Fine collection of nine folio volumes comprising the set "The Army and "Navy of the United States 1776-1891", (Philadelphia: George Barrie), 1891, Parts 2-10, each volume containing twenty printed pages of information and four color lithograph prints, totaling thirty-six such images overall, together forming an outstanding record of the evolution of the U.S. military from its inception to the then-modern force of the 1890's. Each page of text bears one or more monochrome illustrations, which together with the color plates from a detailed and attractive view of the uniforms, weapons, ships and other equipment of the Army and Navy throughout its history, including the Revolutionary War, Mexican-American War and Civil War. The majority of the color plates bear the printed signature of artist Julian O. Davidson, best known for his oversized painting "The Battle of Lake Erie". Additional images bear the printed signature of artist Andre Castaigne; the most notable of these depicts a deserter's execution by firing squad. Other artists featured include William B.T. Trego and Eugene Chaperon, also noteworthy military artists in their own right. The text pages of each volume include an appendix listing all of the commissioned officers of the U.S. Army by regiment within the dates covered by the work. Each volume is housed in a cover of blue cloth boards decorated with gilt title and the Great Seal of the United States in red. Unfortunately, volumes one and eleven are missing from the set, and several volumes shows light damp stains and minor chips to the page edges, none of which affects the text or images in the slightest. Overall an outstanding historical resource, as well as a work of art in its own right.
