THE ANGRY REACTION TO ANDREW JOHNSON'S CONSPIRACY ACCUSATIONS
JOHN BELL ROBINSON Author of "Pictures of Slavery and Anti-Slavery: Advantages of Negro Slavery and the Benefits of Negro Freedom, Morally, Socially, and Politically Considered". Good content A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Philadelphia, Feb. 24, 1866 to powerful Pennsylvania politician Adam J. Glossbrenner. In small part: "…Pardon me for not writing you sooner of the release of my son…released one week after I saw you…He was held 17 months and unconditionally discharged without being informed for what he was being arrested and destined. The veto [Johnson's veto of the Freedman's Bureau days earlier] has produced great excitement here. On hearing of the veto, the President was denounced as a Copper-head, but when his speech of the 22nd made its appearance in full, he was announced as a Copper-head Traitor, and a special friend of Jeff[erson Davis]…A large majority of the so-called Republican party are very bitter…The Democrats…are ready for a great jubilee…Many of the Democrat newspapers put out their grappling irons for his capture, after the assassination…I, among many, glory in his honesty and moral courage…". Very good. In his impromptu speech before supporters at the White House on Feb. 22, 1866, Johnson referred to himself over 200 times, spoke of those still opposed to peace with the South, and accused Thaddeus Stevens, Wendell Phillips and Charles Sumner of plotting his assassination.
