Description:

War-date letter sent home by Union Pvt. Elbridge Franklin, Co. C, 5th Michigan Infantry, 4pp. 8vo., "Camp near Yorktown [Va.]", Apr. 15, 1862 to his father on the siege of Yorktown. In small part: "...The siege progresses...too slow to suit the impatient soldiers...all that has been done to reduce Yorktown has been to bring up siege guns mortars a fleet of gun boats & to throw up entrenchments...only fighting when they make a sortie from their fortifications...there was firing all day along our lines for several miles...to get the distance & range so as to be ready when the final attack is made...We are now in the woods...to be out of the way of the enemy's shell. Solid shot can still reach us...Several shell were thrown at us one of these burst rather near me...the Rebels drove in the pickets of the Regt that relieved us killing 6 of them and wounding several...their reserve had driven the rebels back...Gen. [Hiram] Berry now commands...in a very few days the bombardment & taking of Yorktown may be announced...we are liable to be called on any moment..." Very good. The Confederates would remain in Yorktown until withdrawing on May 4.
