Description:

THE 4TH CAVALRY "OPERATING AGAINST INDIANS"
Good lot of four manuscript L.S.'s, each 1p. 4to. on Headquarters Fifth Military District letterhead, Austin, Tx., Feb. 23-Apr. 11, 1870 to Capt. Clarence Mauck, 4th U.S. Cavalry (three letters noting "Operating Against Indians"), from A.A.G. F[?]. Clay Wood. In the first letter Wood acknowledges Mauck's arrival at Blanco, Texas and advises him he may relocate to any point which would be "for the best interests of the service". The second letter indicates that the commanding general has approved Mauck's movements and allows him to purchase fodder "as may be absolutely necessary". The last two letters also deal with procuring forage, and ask Mauck when he expects to return to Austin. Very good. CLARENCE MAUCK (1831-1889) led 4th Cavalry soldiers in the expeditions against the Cheyenne in Wyoming and escorted two hundred warriors and their families 600 miles from Nebraska to Oklahoma, narrowly averting a massacre when disarming them. Mauck also fought Indians throughout the Southwest.
