THE 2ND OHIO SUFFERS AT CHICKAMAUGA LETTER & COVER WITH RARE CHATTANOOGA STRAIGHT-LINE CANCELLATION
A great war-date A.L.S., by Pvt. James H. Gowdy [KIA Resaca, Ga., May 14, 64], Co. A, 2nd Ohio Vols., 4pp. 8vo., "Chattanooga, Tenn., Dec. 30, 63," to his friend Pvt. Milo Cooley, 27th Mass. Vols., in part: "…I could picture you as you looked the last time I saw you. At the time neither of us dreamed that we should be engaged at the present time as we now are…you & myron seem to think that you can not see Veteran service but I can. Three of our company, myself one of the number, was sworn into the veteran service on the 14th…I can not ask any married man to go in for three years longer…our regiment has done much hard marching as any…everything is very scare here at present…one of the boys from Co. D [was] selling chickens at…$1.50 a piece…it will not last long. The railroad will soon be finished from Bridgeport. A distance of about 30 miles by land. The only way we have for transportation is by river and only three small steamboats at that. It is over 50 miles by water…a large army can be well supplied with Hardtack and sowbelly…Government Greenbacks suits me very well if they will only give me enough of it…more than a third of Gen. Hooker's 12th Corps will reenlist. The 60th Ohio raised near Urbana has gone home. The 9th Michigan went home day before yesterday. The 30th Indiana of our brigade starts for home tomorrow…I missed one of the hardest fights that our regiment was in…I refer to the battle of Chickamauga on the 19th & 20th of Sept…our company had 7 men wounded & 12 taken prisoners…". Also included is the original stamped, with rare Chattanooga, Tenn. straight line cancelation, transmittal cover. Very good.
