Description:

THADDEUS S. C. LOWE
(1832 - 1913) American balloonist whose Union balloon corps tracked enemy movements, most notably at Fair Oaks where observations directed artillery and prevented a Union rout. Uncommon A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., [New York], Mar. 14, 1868, to his partner James T. Ames concerning the imminent installation of his ice compression machine aboard a steamship, and mentioning a recent glitch that has to be rectified. In part: "...As I stated in my last letter I shall endeavor to be in Chicopee on Tuesday...In regards the freezing up of the stop cocks, I can easily remedy that when we put up the machinery again, there are three ways to prevent it, which I will explain when I get there. I go early in the morning with Mr. Allen to take all the measurements of the ship &c as well as to see what further has been done with his friends about the subscriptions. I think that I shall get the cock for the machinery now on hand during the coming week...". At this time, Lowe was continuing to fine-tune refrigeration techniques as he further developed his compression ice machine designed for steamships so that shipping farm produce long distances could be done safely and feasibly. As financing the project continued to be a struggle, he eagerly sought new subscribers. Very good.
