Description:

(1746 - 1817) Polish military officer and American Revolution brigadier general, he constructed the defenses of West Point, headed transportation during Greene's retreat, and was a founder of the Society of the Cincinnati. Rare and important A.L.S. 1p. small folio, [n.p, July 9-15, 1784] bidding farewell to his comrade Colonel Richard Varick with whom he shared a warm relationship. Before his departure to Europe on the Courier de l'Europe on July 15, he writes a lighthearted farewell to his comrade in arms, in part: '...I am going to embark to Europe from this place and am sorry I have not the pleasure to take you by the hand. God bless you with a good Wife, many Children and plenty of Money for them all, be happy and you will add to mine.' Koscisusko returned to Poland and led a brief career as Poland's leader before his capture by the Russians in 1794. Richard Varick (1753 - 1831) served as Benedict Arnold's personal secretary before his treason and then appointed by Washington to be Secretary for Continental Army records. Some soiling, moderate to heavy ink erosion as shown and worthy of further restoration, not affecting legibility, silked for preservation.
