TEXAS PATRIOT'S CHILDREN DEED SLAVES TO THEIR MOTHER
Good content manuscript D.S., 1p. legal folio, Montgomery Co., Republic of Texas, Dec. 26, 1840, in which the children of deceased Texas patriot Col. ROBERT RANKIN (1753-1857) deed unto their obviously beloved mother: '...a certain molatto [sic] girl by the name of Jina aged twenty seven years and her two last children the first girls aged two years named Hulda the second a boy child aged six weeks called Milton the same being slaves for life...now in the possession of his widow...and forever disown any part therein...' Some weak folds, margins a bit ragged and some wear, still very good. ROBERT RANKIN (1753-1837) was a Revolutionary War veteran who entered the service of the Continental Army in 1776 with the Third Regiment of the Virginia line and participated in the battles of Germantown, Brandywine, and Stony Point, as well as the siege of Charleston, where he was captured. He moved to Kentucky where he was prominent in politics, later to to Joseph Vehlein's colony in Texas. He was a friend of Sam Houston, and his influence with the Indians in the region was well known. Houston reputedly called upon him in the spring of 1836 to encourage neutrality among the Indians during the crucial Texan retreat toward San Jacinto.
