Description:

TEXAS PATRIOT LORENZO DE ZAVALA IS GRANTED LAND IN TEXAS UPON WHICH HE WILL BUILD HIS HOME
LORENZO DE ZAVALA (1788-1836) Mexican physician, politician and diplomat, contributor to constitutions of both the First Federal Republic of Mexico and the Republic of Texas. For the latter, he also signed their Declaration of Independence from Mexico, designed the first flag, and served as the first provisional Vice President. Excessively rare, historic partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., New York, Oct. 16, 1830, a land grant issued by the Galveston Bay & Texas Land Company, granting Zavala of one "labor" of land (approx. 177 acres) within the territory north of Galveston Bay already granted to Zavala and fellow "empresarios" Joseph Vehlein and David G. Burnett (later provisional president of the Republic of Texas), for the purposes of colonization. The bounds of this territory are defined in the agreement, with a small map further depicting their boundaries at bottom left. This particular parcel is of great importance, as it is given to Zavala to use to establich his own personal residence in what would become the Republic of Texas. The document is signed at the conclusion by three trustees and attorneys of the company. Zavala boldly signs on the verso in black ink. Shows folds, with some chips to the edges, else very good. The territory held by the Galveston Bay & Texas Land Company, directly bordering the United States, was home to many American settlers who were accustomed to democratic rule, and a center of animosity to the rule of Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Zavala's residence in the territory likely influenced his decision to assist the Texas independence movement.
