Description:

(TEXAS) JOSE ALVAREZ DE TOLEDO
JOSE ALVAREZ DE TOLEDO (1779 - 1858) Politician and leader of a military force against Spanish rule in Texas, and a supporter of Jose Bernardo Maximiliano Gutierrez de Lara in his efforts for Mexico to secede from Spain. Toledo took control of San Antonio on August 1, 1813 and was defeated by the Spanish Army at the Battle of Medina on August 18, 1813. Toledo fled Texas and in 1814 led an unsuccessful attempt to invade Texas from Louisiana. They made it past the Sabine River but did not make any significant progress. Rare A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Philadelphia, Sep. 23, 1816 in French to Charles Vaughan, secretary of the British Legation in Spain. Toledo hopes to meet with Vaughan during the latter's stay in Philadelphia to communicate 'news of the greatest importance'. Vaughan dockets the letter on verso, indicating that the letter and their eventual meeting was 'Respecting the views of Joseph Bonaparte in regard to Mexico'. Evenly toned, else very good. In the summer of 1816, there were several newspaper reports about conversations regarding Joseph Bonaparte seeking the throne of Mexico. At the same time Toledo sought to reconcile himself with the Spanish authorities. He would later return to Spain where he was an adviser to King Fernando VII.
