TEXAS' FIRST GOVERNOR'S BOND TO RECOVER SLAVES
J. PINCKNEY HENDERSON (1808–1858) Statesman, soldier, and first governor of the state of Texas. He was commissioned by David G. Burnet as brigadier general and sent to the United States to recruit for the Texas army. Henderson organized a company in North Carolina and sent it to Texas, reputedly at his own expense. Upon his return to Texas in November 1836, he was appointed attorney general of the republic under Sam Houston and in December 1836 succeeded Stephen F. Austin as secretary of state. Fine content manuscript D.S. signed by Henderson, 2pp. 4to., 'Republic of Texas, County of San Augustine', Jan. 15, 1841. Henderson, acting as a legal securer of a bond, indemnifies Sheriff William Kimbro of San Augustine Co. in the amount of $5,000 in an action brought by principal George W. Reynolds 'to recover certain negroe [sic] slaves...against Ezekiel w. Cullen returnable to the next Term of [the] District Court for said County...shall keep the said Kimbro harmless from all damages...' Boldly signed by Henderson and the plaintiff at conclusion. Very good. Ezekiel W. Cullen (1814-1882) was an early Texas early legislator, jurist, and lawyer. In 1835 he joined the Texas revolutionary forces and participated in the siege of Bexar. In 1839 President Mirabeau B. Lamar appointed Cullen to judgeship of the First District, vacant after the death of Shelby Corzine.
