Description:

(TEXAS CONFEDERATE ARMY DISCHARGE)
Rare official document from the Army of the Confederate States, a partly-accomplished "Soldier's Discharge" on decorative paper with official letterhead, 1p., 4to, Houston, April 28, 1862, confirming the honorable discharge of "L. Baring", a private in the 4th Texas Infantry Battalion. In part: "...L. Baring, a Private of Captain Alexander's Company, Oswald's Battalion, T[exas] V[olunteer] Infantry...is hereby HONORABLY discharged from the Army of the Confederate States, By reason of expiration of term of service and by Special Order No. 632...". Baring was a private in Major Theodore Oswald's infantry battalion, known as the German Citizen Guards. This 215-man force formed prior to the Civil War as a home defense unit [called the Burgerwehr] near the borders of New Braunfels, Texas, and were mobilized by order of Jefferson Davis to serve attached to Samuel Maxey's regiment as "six month volunteers". The document is rare because, although Germans formed the largest ethnicity to fight in the Civil War, the majority did so for the Union, particularly in industrial cities such as New York [the Turner regiments]. Some age toning and slight chipping along edges, else very good.
