Description:

Pair of rare autographs on a war-date document from the 5th Texas Regiment of the "Texas Brigade", 2pp. oblong 8vo., "Head[?], Va", Feb. 27, 1864. Two men from Co. G seek permission to travel to Greenville "on business for the company", the request signed by Capt. John Smith. On the verso, Brig. Gen. JOHN GREGG (1828–1864) pens an endorsement: "Brid. Hd. Qrs. Feb. 28 Appd. & Respy forwarded John Gregg Brig. Gen." Gregg formed the 7th Texas Infantry, becoming its colonel, and was captured at Fort Donelson. Paroled, he later fought in the west and was wounded at Chickamauga. Returning east, he fought in several major engagements until his death at Petersburg. There are also two autographs endorsements signed by KING BRYAN (1818–1866), lieutenant colonel in the 5th Texas Infantry Regiment. After Col. Robert M. Powell was wounded and captured at Gettysburg, Bryan, who was also wounded there, led the regiment through the Battle of the Wilderness. He was so badly wounded in both arms during the famous "Lee to the Rear" counterattack there that he was disabled and had to retire from the Army. Complications from his wounds led to his death the following year. Some weak folds and an area of thinned paper, still overall very good.
