(TEXAS ARCHIVES WAR) TEXAS SLAVE HIRE AGREEMENT
Manuscript Texas slave hire agreement, 1p. 8vo., Indianola, Jan. 1, 1862. In part: '...one or either of us promise to pay to the order of...[the] Administrator of the Estate of Angelina B. Eberly...the sum of One Hundred Dollars...for the hire of the girl Caroline , belonging to said Estate, for the year 1862, and we promise to deliver said girl ...at the end of the term of hiring we also agree to furnish said girl with a sufficient amount of clothing for the present year...' Signed at conclusion by a 'Thos. McKnight' and one other, illegible. Very good. Eberly had an important part in Texas history. She was an innkeeper at Austin, and Sam Houston preferred to live at her inn versus the presidential mansion. More important, when Houston ordered the Secretary of State to return the archives back to Houston, the citizens of Austin were determined to prevent the act. They formed a n armed vigilante 'Committee of Safety' to prevent the move. In December, 1842, Houston announced that Austin was no longer the capital and ordered Co. Thomas I. Smith and Capt. Eli Chandler to removed the records. As they loaded three wagons with documents, Eberly spied the move and fired a cannon, alerting the citizens of Austin, initiating the 'Archives War'.
