Description:

TEACHING MODELS OF KRIEGSMARINE SHIPS
Excellent set of eight unpainted cast metal models, the largest 19 1/2" long, each depicting a warship of the German Kriegsmarine and intended to train U.S. Navy aviators to recognize and distinguish these from friendly vessels. The models each represent a specific ship or class of ships in service with the Kriegsmarine circa 1942, including the battleships TIRPITZ and SCHARNHORST, the "pocket battleship" ADMIRAL SCHEER, the heavy cruiser PRINZ EUGEN, the light cruisers KOLN and NURNBERG, and destroyers of the LEBERECHT MAASS and 1936A classes (the latter known to the Allies and labeled here as the "NARVIK" class). Each model is affixed to a wood slat, allowing it to be securely stored within a grey-painted 37" x 16 3/4" x 4 1/2" case, marked "U.S. Navy Teacher Models German Navy". The base of each slat bears the name of the ship, and identifies the maker as the Comet Metal Products Co. of Richmond Hill, New York. A plastic label affixed to the edge of the case further marks the set as the property of the "Special Devices Division" of the USN Bureau of Aeronautics. A turret and superstructure element of the ADMRIAL SCHEER model are detached but present, and several other models shows minor damage or losses, primarily to the fragile wire masts, else very good and surprisingly intact overall.
