Description:

TEACHING A CONTRABAND TO READ
Good content A.L.S., 4pp. 8vo., Elizabethtown [Ky.], Oct. 2, 1862 in which soldier J. L. Livingstone writes his father. In part: "...I expect Republicanism has about played out...there is scarcely a Republican in town, but says he is a 'downright traitor', 'secessionist'...Hand and Mary have just gone up to Uncle James...LaRhett has sent him a big specimen of a contraband...Uncle James seems as pleased with him as though he were a fortune. He says he is going to learn him how to read and write this winter. I wish he had a strapping old wench for a wife and then he would ask for nothing more...". Very good.
