789. ZACHARY TAYLOR (1784-1850) Twelfth President of the United States, "Old Rough and Ready" was also a hero of the Mexican War, taking Monterrey and defeating Santa Anna. Nice content A.L.S. "Z. Taylor Lt. Col." with integral address leaf, 1p. 4to., Louisville, Ky., Sep. 28, 1824 to Col. George Gibson, Commissary General of Subsistence in Washington. Taylor recommends two Louisville men who wish to act as suppliers to the army. In part: "...Lee White, Esqr. And Benja. Lawrence & Co. of this place...have made propositions to supply provisions for the Troops of the United States to be delivered to Natchitoches, Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Pensacola...I have been personally acquainted with those Gentlemen for a number of years & have no hesitation in stating that in point of integrity wealth &c. they are among the first in the state, & that any contract or engagement that may be entered into with them, will be faithfully and promptly complied with in every respect..."
