T-34 TANK TREAD RECOVERED AT LENINGRAD
A fractured, ground-dug tread link from a formidable Russian T-34 tank, recovered near Lake Ladoga on the outskirts of Leningrad. According to the data sheet included, a Russian offensive against the Germans started on 12 January 1943. Repeated attacks by the Red Army units overcame the powerful German fortifications on the wetlands to the south of Lake Ladoga, and on 18 January 1943, the Volkhov Front's 372nd Rifle Division met troops of the 123rd Rifle Brigade of the Leningrad Front, cojoining with 24th Tank Division of the 10th Mechanized Corps in opening a 10-12 km wide land corridor which provided some relief to the besieged population of Leningrad. The provenance also incorporates a photo of the piece in situ in Russia.
