SUSAN B. ANTHONY
(1820 - 1906) American reformer active in suffrage, temperance and abolitionist movements instrumental in obtaining women the right to vote. Excellent, historic association inscribed and signed book, "The History of Woman Suffrage, Volume IV", by Anthony and her biographer and fellow suffrage leader IDA HUSTED HARPER (1851-1931), [Rochester: Susan B. Anthony], 1902, 1144pp. 8vo., part of a six volume set self-published by Anthony, comprising a primary source history of the women''s suffrage movement from its inception in the 1880''s to the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Anthony inscribes the front flyleaf in black ink to fellow suffrage leader KATE M. GORDON (1861-1932), organizer of the Southern States Woman Suffrage Conference who favored the establishment of voting rights on a state-by-state basis, as opposed to a constitutional amendment. In full: "...This huge volume is presented to you because of the willing aid you gave to Ms. Husted Harper - in the preparation of the Louisiana Chapter - and because of my love and admiration of you and your good work for our good cause - Your sincere friend and coworker Susan B. Anthony 17 Madison Street Rochester N.Y. Feb. 18, 1902" The volume has been deaccessed from the East Blue Hill, New Jersey library, and bears their catalog number on the spine, property stamp on the front pastedown, and record card on the rear pastedown. It also bears an ink ownership inscription on the front pastedown, and an ink identifying inscription above Anthony''s dedication. The binding shows splitting at the front pastedown, at the title page, and at the first page of Chapter 42, covering Louisiana and featuring a portrait of Kate M. Gordon, as well as minor internal foxing. The volume is bound in red leather boards, showing soiling, fading and bumps to the corners, else very good.
