HARLAN (1833-1911) Associate Justice, known as ‘The Great Dissenter' due to his dissents in many cases involving in civil rights. A.L.S 2pp. 8vo., Quebec, Aug. 14, 1900, to William S. Gregory, in part: ‘…The…documents…have been received and I have laid them aside until all the documents, on both sides, have been received…', with more friendly content. Together with STEPHEN W. FIELD (1816-1899) Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, the longest-serving member until his record was surpassed by William O. Douglas. Bold signature on the verso on a small card, mounting traces to left edge; WILLIAM R. DAY (1849-1923) Associate Justice and Secretary of State. Signature on a small card, toned; ABRAHAM FORTAS (1910-1982) Associate Justice remembered for his role in creating the United Nations. Signature on a card; DAVID J. BREWER (1837-1910) Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Brief A.L.S. on Court letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 5, 1890, sending his autograph; and WARREN E. BURGER (1907-1995) Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1969-86), a strict constructionist in criminal matters. T.L.S. on Court letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Nov. 5, 1986, sending thanks for a caricature. Six pieces, very good.
