Lot 102
SUMTER FLYING ARTILLERY ALLEN S. CUTTS (1826-1896) Captain and organizer of the Sumter Flying Artillery, promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in May, 1862. Over time the name of the battalion became known as the "Sumter Battalion" and "Cutts' Battalion", seeing action at Seven Pines, Seven Days before Richmond, Second Manassas, Malvern Hill, and Gettysburg. The lot includes arguably the first muster role for the original company formed by Cutts, a manuscript D.S. 1p. long folio, 7 1/2" x 25", [Americus, Ga.], May 23, 1861. Headed "We the Undersigned do hereby tender our Services... to the Governor of the State of Georgia, As the Sumter Flying Artillery to Serve during the entire War with the United States..." The role lists a total of 64 men. A few very minor contemporary ink smudges, usual folds, otherwise very fine condition. Offered together with ALLEN S. CUTTS A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Americus, Ga., May 16, 1861 to Adjutant General H. C. Wayne at Milledgeville complaining to him about the lack of response to his requests for arms for his company. He writes in part: "...I wrote you some time ago in regard to our Sabres & Battery. I forwarded to you a requisition for the Sabres and also pistols with a blank kept for you to fill up in case we could not get the pistols. Some two weeks has elapsed & I have had nothing from you nor have we received the Sabres. If we are to be refused our equipment for our Light Artillery it only remains for us to tender our services to the Government at Montgomery or disband. We meet on Saturday to determine what we will do and hope to have an answer from you on that day. We prefer to get our Equipment from our own state and tender our services to the Governor. I have a large company of picked men, just such as are needed for our Flying Artillery company... ". Usual folds, otherwise fine condition. $500-700
