Description:

(SUMATRAN EXPEDITION) CHARLES M. ENDICOTT
(1793-1863) Captain of the merchant ship FRIENDSHIP, whose capture by Sumatran pirates precipitated the first instance of U.S. military intervention in Southeast Asia. A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Salem Bank, July 3, 1858, Endicott offers to help his correspondent in a disagreement over an estate. Docketed on the verso, folds and minor toning, with a pencil identifying inscription on the verso, else very good. In January 1831, the Friendship anchored at the Sumatran town of Kuala Batu to take on a load of pepper. While Endicott was ashore, the ship was seized by pirates, who murdered many of the crew and looted the cargo. Endicott enlisted the help of several other American merchantmen and recaptured the ship. Upon returning to Salem, the ship''s owners petitioned president Andrew Jackson to avenge the attack. He in turn dispatched the frigate USS POTOMAC to Sumatra, where she captured five forts and destroyed three Sumatran ships as a warning against the further harassment of American ships.
