Description:

(SULTANA) FREDERIC SPEED
FREDERIC SPEED (1841-1911) Union general from Maine who served at First Bull Run and Port Hudson, as well as many of the other engagements around the Gulf, settling in Vicksburg after the war as a judge. The only person charged in the Sultana disaster, he was initially found guilty, but the verdict was later overturned. The Sultana was a commercial steamboat which exploded and sank on the Mississippi River on April 27, 1865. This incident remains the worst maritime disaster in American history with 1,864 people having been killed. At the time, it was overshadowed by the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. War-date partly-printed D.S., 1p. 8vo., New Orleans, Dec. 23, 1863, an order concerning provisions reports. Very good.
