Description:

SULLIVAN A. MEREDITH
(1816 – 1874) Union general, wounded in action at Second Bull Run and subsequently served as commissioner for the exchange of prisoners of war. Good content and association, war-date A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Fort Monroe, VA, Jan. 1, 1864, on his ‘Office Commissioner for Exchange' letterhead, to Maj. Gen. Ethan Allen Hitchcock (1798-1870), who also served as a commissioner for exchange. In part: ‘...I felt confident that you would not believe such infamous rumours in relation to me, still, the mere fact of their being in circulation has annoyed me excessively, nor do I see that I can do anything in the matter; so I will try to obtain what comfort I can… Gen [Benjamin] Butler's grand effort at exchanges has turned out as I expected & no doubt, in accordance with your expectations also. I feel extremely sorry for our prisoners but I will confess that I feel able to bear the mortification of Genl B's failure with some degree of… resignation…' He signs ‘S. A. Meredith' in black ink at the conclusion. The original transmittal envelope is tabbed to the overleaf, and the letter shows original mailing folds with notable horizontal splits thereto, and with cello tape residue to the verso, otherwise in very good condition overall.
