Description:

SUBMARINE U.S.S. KETE
(SS-369) The ill-fated sub USS KETE departed Pearl Harbor on her first patrol in the East China Sea on Oct. 31, 1944. Under the leadership of Lieut. Commander Edward Ackerman (1915-1945), she is believed to have sunk the Japanese troop transport Keizan and the Japanese cargo ships Sanka Maru and Dokan Maru. On Mar. 20, 1945, she was ordered to return to Pearl Harbor for a refitting, stopping at Midway Island for fuel. Though she sent off one official message of confirmation, the Kete was never seen or heard from again! On Apr. 16, 1945, she was official classified as "lost at sea". Here we offer a fine relic linked to this ill-fated vessel, a gold-plate oval locket with the U. S. Naval Academy crest and bearing the date 1939, bearing within the photographs of her lieutenant commander Edward Ackerman and that of this fiancée who retained the locket for more than 50 years. The locket measures3/4" wide x 1" tall and is in fine condition. A wonderful, and certainly extremely scarce, relic from the vessel's doomed commander. From the personal collection of World War II and Civil War historian Michael Miner. Miner's thirty-year collection was built through an extensive system of contacts he developed with artifact hunters and diggers in Europe and the Far East, and he maintained careful records of the items he amassed.
