ROBERT STROUD (1890 - 1963) "The Bird Man of Alcatraz", imprisoned for the murder of a man in Juneau and a prison guard, Stroud made his life's work while incarcerated the befriending and study of birds and became a widely-respected ornithologist in the process. A.L.S., 2pp, 4to, (back and front), in pencil, Alcatraz Prison, CA., March 5, 1946. In part: "...You don't have to thank me for any nice things I say about you. You have it all coming. I am not feeling very good but the prospects are that I will be better soon. There is a new Doctor here and he is pretty good. Once he knows for sure what is wrong, it will be easy to do something about it. I hope that (?) does alright with his library. That is a pretty good business if handled right, because such places handle books that are not carried by the public libraries such as sex stories...". Much more, very good. $200 - 300
