791. ISAAC INGALLS STEVENS (1818-1862) Union major general and western explorer, fought with distinction at Port Royal, Secessionville and Second Bull Run; killed in an engagement at Chantilly. Scarce A.L.S. "I. I. Stevens", 1p. 4to., Washington, Apr. 11, 1851 to Prof. Baird at the Smithsonian. In part: "...The plates relating to Tides Cat Island will be ready tomorrow. When will you want the plates and will they be sent to you at the Smithsonian?..." A light brush in th text, else very good. Stevens at the time was at the time assistant in charge of the Coast Survey Office in Washington. $200-300
