682. ISAAC INGALLS STEVENS (1818-1862) Union major general and western explorer, fought with distinction at Port Royal, Secessionville and Second Bull Run; killed in an engagement at Chantilly. Scarce A.L.S. "I. I. Stevens", 1p. 8vo., Washington, Apr. 19, 1851 to Prof. Baird at the Smithsonian. In part: "...We can send 250 sets of the plates today and the remainder on Thursday or Friday. I will on Monday forward a portion and the remainder when finished..." Fine. Stevens at the time was at the time assistant in charge of the Coast Survey Office in Washington. $200-300
