Description:

(1809 - 1867) Confederate major general who captured Lexington, and fought at Iuka, Corinth and Red River as well. Known for his Missouri Expedition, a late Confederate attempt to push into Missouri which ultimately failed. The war left him a broken and impoverished man. Great content, war-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Arkansas, March 16, 1865, to Confederate Gen. Edmund K. Smith (1824-1893) regarding a request for reinforcements. In part: '...Colonel Province the present Provost Marshall of the Dist. of Arkansas commanded a regiment at the Battle of Oak Hills, crossed the Miss. River with his regiment and was engaged at the battles of Iuka and Corinth, in all of which he behaved with distinguished gallantry, after which he was detached from my command and placed in command of a brigade at Port Hudson, was afterward captured by the enemy. I would respectfully ask that if consistent with the interest of the Service, he be authorized...to proceed east of the Ouachita river for the purposes of collecting the skulkers and deserters from our armies...Should he succeed in raising a sufficient number of these men, that he be allowed to take them together with a portion of his former command...and organize them within a regiment...could add greatly to our depleted ranks...' Very fine condition. This letter perfectly illustrates the lengths Confederate generals had to go to towards the end of the war to maintain the strength of their forces. After his failed Missouri Campaign in late 1864, Price's army was gradually being pushed further south through Arkansas and eventually Texas. Desertion was rampant in his army and indeed the entire Confederacy as it became increasingly apparent that the North would win the war. Here, the request for ‘skulkers and deserters' illustrates his true desperation. Price would soon flee to Mexico rather than surrender, and while he would eventually return to U.S., he would die died not long after, in 1867 from cholera.
