STEPHEN HOPKINS
(1707 - 1785) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, ten-time Governor of Rhode Island, and author of the first anti-slavery law in the United States. Partly-printed D.S., 1p., folio, Providence, February 7, 1738, an indenture document for Scituate property. The holographic text is in Hopkins' hand, and he signs three times, including once with his title "Stephen Hopkins, Town Clerk". Before Hopkins became involved in revolutionary politics, he held several positions in local government administration, including town clerk. Moderate toning and foxing, else very good.
