Description:

STEPHEN D. LEE
(1833-1908) Confederate Lieutenant General who directed artillery at Second Bull Run and Antietam, later led a corps at Atlanta and in the Carolinas. War-date A.E.S. on the verso of an A.L.S. of Capt. C. Vandeford of the Demopolis, Alabama Ordnance Department, April 8, 1864, to Lt. J. W. Thompson, in part: ‘…Property Return Capt. J. A. Owens, comdg Lt. Battery for 4th Qr 1863, is read, has been examined, and will be forwarded to the Bureau at Richmond…The attention of the Inspector General has been called to this very significant special order from Genl. Ferguson, to expend in practice damaged and condemned ammunition…'. On verso, SAMUEL WRAGG FERGUSON (1834 - 1917) Confederate brigadier general who served with Beauregard until Shiloh, then under Wheeler in the Carolinas, also adds a lengthy and indignant A.E.S.: ‘The official letter from a subordinate officer of the Ordnance Bureau to one of my staff officers is respty referred to Lt Genl Ord Dept through Maj. Genl. S. Lee as improper and disrespectful…I regard the concluding paragraph as an unwarranted piece of impertinence by Captain Vandeford. S. F. Ferguson Brig Genl'. At middle, STEPHEN D. LEE forwards the request and add his two cents: ‘Respectfully forwarded for the information of the Genl. with the request that the matter may be [?], it not being the province [?] of a subordinate officer to reflect on the conduct of his Superiors. S. D. Lee Maj. Genl'. Very good condition, and a nice pairing of signatures.
