Lot 445
445. JOHN STEINBECK (1902-1968) American author and one of the greatest fiction writers of the twentieth century. His works include The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and East of Eden. For his efforts he was awarded the Pulitzer and Nobel prizes. Fine association A.L.S. "John" on a sheet of canary legal paper, 1p., Apr. 25, 1965 to noted writer of the newspaper column "The Lyon's Den", Leonard Lyons. In part: "...Dear Lenny - Miss G.L. sent prints and they are very good. I am enclosing one for you in return for pimping. The blown-up two shot Elaine [his wife] is having framed for our hall in Sag [Harbor] which has such marvels as Gadge [Elia] Kazan as an actor, John O'Hara smiling and Bob Capa writing. There are many other imponderables. Elaine says that when I stop looking at pretty girls what will there be for her. She does, however, take a dim view of pinching the melon. I am house-bound rewriting my new book and soon we will move out to Sag where I can really get to work..." Chipping to top edge not affecting text, else very good. Elia Kazan was responsible for bringing Steinbeck's East of Eden to the big screen in 1955. The book he mentions is likely America and Americans, a collection of essays which would be his last book to be published. Sold with a printed copy in booklet form of Steinbeck's 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature acceptance speech. $800-1,200
