Description:

STATES RIGHTS GIST
(1831 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general who commanded a division at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge, led his own brigade in the Atlanta campaign, killed in action leading his men at Franklin. His father Nathaniel, an ardent support of John C. Calhoun, chose his son's name to reflect his own political sentiments. Rare war date partly-printed D.S., 1p. 14 x 9 in., [Charleston], Jan. 6, 1862, an appointment issued by the State of South Carolina appointing CHARLES S. CRESSWELL 'as 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Regiment of S.C. Infantry Provl. Forces of Confederate States'. Gist writes at bottom left: 'By Order S. R. Gist Adj. Insp. Genl of S.C.' Also signed at left by FRANCIS W. PICKENS (1807–1869), Governor of South Carolina when that state became the first to secede, sanctioned the decision to fire on a ship bringing supplies to the beleaguered garrison at Fort Sumter, and to the bombardment of the fort. Also signed by WILLIAM R. HUNTT (1833–1869), Secretary of State. In 1865 Sherman's troops took Columbia. William and his wife, Mary A. (Wells) Huntt were detained and questioned. Mary had sewn the Ordinance of Secession into the hem of her skirt and concealed the State Seal by sitting on it during the investigation, thus saving the artifacts for South Carolina. With official transmittal envelope. WITH: 'Special Orders No. 28', 1p. 4to., Sullivan's Island, July 17, 1864, appoints Lieut. Charles Cresswell of the 1st South Carolina Infantry to Ordnance Officer on Sullivan's Island, South Carolina. Three pieces.
