Exceedingly rare war-date A.D.S. 1S. R. Gist', 'General Order No. 71', 1p. 4to. on Headquarters, Adjutant & Inspector General's Office letterhead, Charleston, May 2, 1861 - only two weeks after the bombardment of Fort Sumter. This general order authorized the promotion of two South Carolinian officers to lieutenant in the 'Battalion of Artillery...since S[tephen]. D. Lee resigned...' The concluding sentence of the general order reads: 'Adj. Genl. of the S. C. Army will extend this order./ By order of the Governor/ S. R. Gist/ Adjutant Genl.' Near fine. STEPHEN DILL LEE (1833-1908) resigning from the U.S. Army in 1861, and entered the Confederate forces as a captain in the South Carolina militia. Beginning on April 11 Lee was aide-de-camp to Brig. Gen. P. G. T. Beauregard. That same day he delivered an ultimatum from Beauregard to Union Maj. Robert Anderson, demanding the evacuation of Fort Sumter, which was (historically) refused. Lee would rise through the ranks to become a Confederate lieutenant general.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee. Please allow 2-3 weeks for shipments after receipt of payment due to the high volume of packages being shipped.
