Lot 1043
1043. STANLEY "MOUSE" MILLER AND THE GRATEFUL DEAD STANLEY "MOUSE" MILLER (b. 1940) American artist best known for his psychedelic art designs for 1960s rock concert posters, as well as Grateful Dead album cover art. Excellent original drawing on a 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of tan paper, a very "Dead-like" pencil drawing of a full-length standing skeleton figure in a porkpie hat, playing with a yo-yo, signed "S. Mouse" and adding his typical mouse device at bottom. Especially telling is a comment he writes in block letters at right: "I CAN MAKE IT WITHOUT YOU - MY POPULARITY IS WELL BEYOND THE DEAD. GRANTED IT WAS OUR ASSOCIATION THAT HELPED MY POPULARITY...LAWYER I NEED A TOOL IN DEALING WITH THEM - A CONTRACT OR TERMS WHICH ARE AMIABLE TO BOTH PARTIES". On the verso there is also a drawing of a muscular hand, presumably Miller's, grasping several paint brushes. Scattered notes and calculations, in another hand, including one: "Pat Harris Gratful [sic] dead Merchandising", etc., overall very good. This is the first we have heard of any dispute between Miller and the band. $3,000 - 4,000
