"STANDARD PLAN FOR THE ORGANIZATION AND OPERATION OF KLANS IN PENNSYLVANIA"
Good group of three documents, all related to the establishment, organization and leadership hierarchy of Ku Klux Klan "Klaverns" (local chapters) in Pennsylvania, includes: typed document, "The Klan in Action - Instructions for Exalted Cyclops - Standard Plan for the Organization and Operation of Klans in Pennsylvania", 16pp. 4to., [n.p.], 1925. This document lays out procedures for regular and special meetings and gives instructions for the establishment, leadership, duties, and membership makeup of special committees (including intelligence gathering, Junior Klan, women''s organizations, and entertainment groups). Paper clip marks at top edge, else very good. WITH: Printed document, 12pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], labeled "Special Instructions No. 1" and with the instructions "This comprehensive treatise covers in detail the general subjects covered in the pamphlet ''Klan Building'' and should be used in conjunctions with the same, and studied carefully by every Exalted Cyclops". The document gives specific instruction to a newly-appointed "Exalted Cyclops" (local leader), regarding the appointment of additional officers for a local "Klavern". It gives further instructions on the establishment of committees, the procurement of a meeting hall, the purchase of robes and hoods for each member, a list of "Don''ts" for the Exalted Cyclops ("Don''t allow Roman Catholics, Jews, Negroes, or those of foreign birth to enter our order through your Klan. Also be on guard for the moral degenerate among the Native-Born, White, Gentile Protestants"), and a list of subjects on which the Exalted Cyclops is expected to profess his knowledge: "...8. Negro problem... 11. White supremacy - what it means and why it must be maintained... 12. The I.W.W. and the Bolshevik... 13. The Jew..." Stapled along the top edge, else very good. WITH: Printed document, 8pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], labeled Special Instructions No. 2" and entitled "Ceremony for the Installation of Officers of Local Klans, and also Approved Funeral Service to be used at the Grave of a Deceased Klansman". This document gives a full script to be followed during the ceremony appointing Klan officers, as well as a script to be used at the funeral service for a deceased member. Stapled along the top edge, else very good. These documents originate from the files of John F. Marshall, "Kligrapp" (secretary) of the Altoona, Pennsylvania chapter of the Ku Klux Klan, and also present with the group are five items of additional correspondence concerning the officers of that "Klavern".
