(STALIN'S PURGES) VASILY ULRIKH
(1889 – 1951) Senior judge of the Soviet Union during most of the regime of Joseph Stalin. Ulrikh served as the presiding judge at many of the major show trials of the Great Purges in the Soviet Union. Ulrikh sentenced Zinoviev, Kamenev, Bukharin, Tukhachevsky, Rodzaevsky, Beloborodov, Yezhov and many others. He attended the executions of many of these men, and occasionally performed executions himself. He personally executed Yan Karlovich Berzin, former head of the Red Army Intelligence Directorate, later called the GRU. Excessively rare typed D.S., 1p. oblong 8vo., 1947, on letterhead of the Supreme Court of the USSR'. Ulrikh orders that the head of the glag Camp No. 1 in Kaliningrad advise inmate Savelyev Mikhail Ivanovich that no grounds have been found to reevaluate his case and therefore his sentence shall stand. Signed in indelible pencil at bottom. File holes at right, a few spots, else very good.
