Description:

ST. LOUIS ARSENAL PASS SIGNED BY A GETTYSBURG HERO
SIDNEY BURBANK (1807 - 1882) Union officer who led a brigade of U.S. Regulars at Chancellorsville and at Gettysburg. At the Wheatfield his brigade was flanked and all but destroyed. Rare D.S., 1p. 12mo., Aug. 22, 1861, a partly-printed pass allowing passage in and out of the St. Louis Arsenal to Maj. Nathaniel C. Macrae. Very good. The St. Louis Arsenal was defended by future general Nathaniel Lyon earlier that year against Missouri militiamen armed by Jefferson Davis who sought to capture the armory. The fighting spilled into the streets of the city causing many civilian deaths as the captured militiamen were marched off as prisoners.
