Description:

Important lot of six items related to German Jews MARGARETE AND HANS-HEINRICH GLUCKSMANN, both of whom were aboard the ill-fated passenger ship MS ST. LOUIS during the so-called 1939 "Voyage of the Damned". Included are four official-form postcards sent by Margarete to Hans-Heinrich following their return to Holland. Margarete writes from Berlin on Feb. 18, Mar. 21, Mar. 25 and Apr. 12 to Hans-Heinrich who is being held at the Jewish transit camp of Westerbork in the Netherlands. Although untranslated, all four postcards bear German censors' marks and stamps. Also present is a June 29, 1939 "Notice of Registration" from the American Consulate in Rotterdam bearing the names of both Margarete and Hans-Heinrich Glucksmann. Finally, there is a partial T.L.S. from the Dutch "Central Registration Bureau for Jews", Amsterdam, Oct. 23, 1946 to Glucksmann advising that there has been no sign of a Dr. Richard Marcuse since his "transport" on Oct. 10, 1942. Fine condition, and worthy of translation and further research. Both Hans-Heinrich and Margarete appear on the list of ST. LOUIS passengers appearing on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum website. Notes accompanying the lot indicate that Hans-Heinrich was spared because his gentile wife refused to divorce him.
