Description:

SS 'ROHM' DAGGER WITH FACTORY-GROUND INSCRIPTION
Very rare SS 'Rohm' dagger, approx. 9 in. blade and 13.5 in. overall, black hardwood grip, solid nickel-silver cross guards, and a black anodized scabbard. Perfectly inset in the grip is an enameled SS button and German national eagle. The grip bears chips at the lower cross guard corners and an approx. 1.25 in. hairline crack through the SS button visible only under magnification. The blade has been factory ground and cross-graining was reapplied, close to but not exactly matching the cross-graining on the front of the blade. The front of the blade still exhibits the original motto: ‘Meine Ehre Heist Trueue' which has lost any darkening which may have been applied. Blade exhibits running marks but is very well-finished in keeping with the factory refurbishment. Maker marked ‘Gottlieb Hammesfahr, Solingen', with cross guard marked ‘III'. Anodized scabbard is generally very good, the lower fitting showing a few dings and damaed ball at scabbard tip. In 1934, Ernst Rohm distributed approximately only about 9,900 SS daggers with his personal inscription to longtime SS members. These daggers were to honor individuals who had served with the SS prior to December, 1931. After the Rohm purge, the inscription was ordered to be removed under the threat of imprisonment. Some examples – such as this one -- were returned to the factory for grinding, while others were simply ground in the field by whatever means were available. Authenticated by the dagger expert in the United States.
