Description:

A fine sterling silver and glass presentation claret jug, roughly 5.5 x 10 x 3.5 in., with a 2 in. diameter mouth. The lid and handle are composed of sterling silver with engraved patterns which cover the top quarter of the glass body. Proof and maker's mark present on the back of the handle. At the center on each side are stylized letter 'F's within laurel wreaths. Around the rim of the lid is the inscription 'Die Fuschse des SS 19, i.e. A.H. Hassengier' which roughly translated reads: 'The Foxes of SS 19 in service of A[dolf?] H[itler?]...' Silver portion is moderately tarnished, some scratching to the bottom glass base, yet overall good condition. The 19th SS were a Latvian division of panzer grenadiers who saw all of their action on the Eastern Front and were at one time commanded by Bruno Streckenbach (1902-1977). This jug would have been engraved and presented to a soldier, possibly by another member of the division. It was not a unit issue which explains why the stylized SS runes are not present. Accompanied by a documented item history provided by our consignor.
