Description:

SS ORCHESTRA MEMBER'S UNIFORM
An unusual Third Reich uniform, the jacket and trousers of an SS orchestra member. The double-breasted, short cut jacket is constructed from white worsted wool, with double rows of pebbled metal buttons securing the front, and with a patch pocket with flap closure at each breast. The lapels are of black silk serge, with the collar trimmed with braided black and silver piping. No collar tabs are present, but the right-hand sleeve bears the Honor Chevron for the Old Guard, while the left-hand sleeve bears a sewn-on wool NSDAP armband with black piping, as worn by SS members. The left-hand breast pocket shows loops for a single medal, while the right-hand shoulder shows attachment remnants for a shoulder strap, although neither of these insignia are fitted. The interior is lined with pale gold silk, and bears the fabric label of retailer Kuhn & Nupnau of Munich. The interior of the right-hand breast is also fitted with a slash pocket, with a large fabric RZM tag located within. The jacket is paired with a pair of black linen trousers, piped on the outside of the legs with silver ribbon. The front opening is secured with four black-painted metal "Solide Elegant"-branded buttons, and an adjustment strap is present at the rear of the waist. A vertical slash pocket is fitted at each hip, with horizontal slash watch and seat pockets on the right-hand side. The interior bears no maker's or retailer's label. Both pieces in very good to fine condition, but for a single holes and some minor soiling to the jacket sleeves. Information on SS orchestras is scant - all we were able to locate was the Liebstandarte Adolh Hitler Musikkorps, formed on August 4, 1933 with 36 musicians led by SS-Hauptsturmführer Hermann Müller-John. In 1934 the orchestra was expanded to 72 men, selected on musical, health and racial qualifications. In the end the corps had an effective body of 96 men.
