Description:

SS OFFICER SEEKS A PROMOTION
A good content T.L.S. by an SS officer seeking a promotion during the Anschluss in Austria, 2pp. legal folio, Berlin, April 8, 1938, written by Karl Schenk to Gauleiter Josef Burckel (1895-1944), explaining his qualifications and references. In part: '...I am giving you the following attached: my military and SS career, a certificate from SS Obergruppenfuhrer [Sepp] Dietrich, a certificate from SA Obergruppenfuhrer von Pfeffer for reference...As your colleague from the Saar era as a consultant at the border intelligence office...I am taking the liberty of making a polite inquiry today as to whether it is possible for me to return to the great task that our Fuhrer Adolf Hitler set through the incorporation of Austria into the German Reich. As an extremely disciplined worker I put all my skills and my rich experience in the field of economic defense, press and organization into the service of the cause...' Accompanied by a typed summary of Schenk's military career. File holes at the left margin, else fine. The Third Reich annexed Austria on March 12, 1938, when the Wehrmacht had entered the country completely unopposed. Two days following this letter, on April 10, there was a referendum passed with overwhelming support that ratified the annexation or 'Anschluss.' While Austrian support for Hitler and the Nazi party was very high, it is believed that the vote was heavily rigged in order obscure any evidence of dissent.
