Description:

SS OFFICER''S SWORD "EHRENDEGEN"
Rare SS Sword "Ehrendegen" ("Sword of Honor"), 32 3/4" blade, 38" overall, as awarded to graduates of the SS "Junkerschulen" ("leadership schools") at Bad Tolz and Braunschweig, and to Allgemeine-SS officers personally selected by Heinrich Himmler. The sword features a "D"-shaped silver hand guard, secured at the top by a threaded socket-style pommel. The grip is of wood covered with black lacquer, wound with a single strand of silver wire. An approx. 1" dia. silver medallion bearing the "sig" runes of the SS is inset into the obverse side of the grip, while a vertical silver bar bisects the reverse. The bottom of the grip is crowned by a silver motif of alternating oak leaves and acorns. The grip shows minor wear to the lacquer, with an approx. 1/4" chip to the wood abutting the top of the hand guard. The crossguard features a swept quillion, and the bottom is stamped with a small hallmark depicting overlapped "sig" runes, indicating manufacture at Dachau. A leather washer is fitted at the base of the tang, which is unmarked. The blade is of a straight saber type, with a 20 1/2" fuller. The blade shows very slight oxidation along its length with only the faintest trace of run marks. A silver cord portapee is suspended from the hand guard, bearing "sig" runes embroidered in black at the top of the knot. The sword is housed in a 34" black-painted steel scabbard, with silver decorations at the throat and chape. The top of the chape again bears the "sig" rune hallmark indicative of manufacture at Dachau. A single suspension ring is attached near the top of the scabbard. The black paint of the scabbard shows scattered areas of slight flaking, with no dents or deformation whatsoever, while the silver embellishments show minor oxidation, entirely commensurate with the age of the sword.
